So I think the ‘Wow Kankri’s a self absorbed twit what an asshole’ posts and the ‘Wow poor Karkat is so fucking lonely how could his friends ditch him like that’ posts all have kind of a common source?
And that is that both Vantases seem to consistently let their good intentions get subsumed by their self-absorbed, desperate need for validation. To be admired, even revered. They need to be the best, and have people acknowledge that, to the point that their sincere desire to help people out gets lost in how they blindly steamroller over what people actually want from them.
Like, Kankri’s gotta be this relentless torrent of Beforian coddling at everyone, the perfect shepherd. Karkat has to be this hyperaggressive Alternian badass of a warlord: the thresh prince, a hatched leader, as furious and indomitable as Kankri is trying to be tolerant and understanding. They’re both performing their own culture’s ideal leader at everyone who comes in earshot to the point that no one wants to.
And so they’re alone. It’s equal parts hilarious and heart-breaking to watch.
