Dear all Bisexuals, Pansexuals, Asexuals, or basically anybody who is not strictly Heterosexual or strictly Homosexual.

According to my psychology professor, we do not exist.

According to her, we are wrong for existing.

My professor flat out said this morning that she does not “believe” in bisexuals. She proceeded to say that the only valid and real orientations are heterosexual, and homosexual, and nothing else exists. There is no in between, and if we believe we are anything but hetero or homo, we are just confused, and mislead.

She also believes transgender people are just confused.

So basically, to her, we are mythical creatures. We are unicorns, from a magical fairyland.

Reblog this if you are a fucking magical unicorn.

Reblog this if you believe orientation shouldn’t even fucking matter.

Reblog this if you believe orientation is a spectrum, and it is NOT black and white.

Reblog this if you know you exist.

oh fuck this professor

You know what’s fucking dumb in the first place?
Labels.

Why do you need a label to define who you are. Putting a label on yourself just makes it so these things help to define you. People focus on that rather than on anything else. People have asked me, “Are you gay?” NO. I’m NOT gay. “Are you bisexual?” NO. I’m NOT. “What are you?” A person who likes people. Sure, there are limits to who I like and fall in love with - but if one year I’m happy dating a woman, and the next fall in love with a man, I don’t think I need a label to tell me that these feelings are wrong, or right, or what say you. I’m a person. I like people.

And this professor is wrong, because all sexualities are valid. No matter what you believe in about yourself. Just know who you are, what you like, and if you feel sorted with your feelings? Awesome. That’s awesome!

In conclusion;
I’m not gay.
I’m not bisexual.
I’m not straight.
I’m not pansexual.

I’m Ellerey.

I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say that labels are dumb. Sexuality and feelings can be complicated, overwhelming and consequently scary. Attaching a label to yourself can act as a sort of an anchor, especially when you’re young and just beginning to figure things out.

That being said, labels can also be kind of detrimental if you worry about them too much. I know that I’ve personally felt much less anxious about these matters now that I’ve stopped taking labels as seriously.

Ultimately, it depends on the person.

I’m Siobhan and when people ask about my sexuality, I tell them that I’m kind of like Captain Jack Harkness.

Personally, I’ve taken to paraphrasing Dirk Strider: I don’t see that it has to be a thing.

That said, I think it’s important to remember that this only applies to non-consensual labeling; I have, at previous times in my life, taken great comfort from being able to claim a label that others recognize, and I’m still ok with utilizing the labels to describe myself in an academic sense, because while “pansexual” is no longer a vital part of my personal identity, I do feel that it is a word which accurately describes something about me and there are situations where this is something that it is relevant to discuss.

For instance.

The case that started this reblog chain.

Refusing to discuss attraction to multiple genders in a manner that makes us sound like we want to be taken seriously is not the way to convince skeptics that we are not in fact magical unicorns. And maybe the words in common use are rather oversimplifications of complex concepts. That’s what words are! They are silly sounds we make with our mouths or silly squiggles we type with our fingers which arbitrarily represent things! This is not a phenomenon limited to queer theory, it’s how language works.
