Iroh II and Zuko, airbender!Iroh AU (at least I’m assuming it’s AU)
At first, everyone thought Prince Iroh was just a very poor firebender (or a “late bloomer,” as grandfather Zuko would furiously insist.) He could only move flame through the air for short distances before it went out, and he couldn’t start his own at all, but he could do some things. He could make fires grow and put them out, he could hold the burning leaf as long as anyone his age, and he excelled at meditating with candles.
Give it air to make it grow, suffocate it to make it shrink. He couldn’t feel the heartbeat of the fire, but he could feel it breathe, and firebending came from the breath, right?
It wasn’t until he was six and, in a fit of frustration during a bending lesson that he just couldn’t master, he let out an angry puff of breathe that knocked his tutor right over. His mother was shocked and his tutor seemed scandalized, and as he listened to them argue he became more and more afraid that he’d done something very wrong. It was several hours later when his grandfather came and found him hiding in the gardens. Grandfather Zuko could be crabby and stern, but he was infinitely gentle that day when he took Iroh’s face in his hands and kissed his forehead and said “you are a child of my house and you will always be treasured and loved. Never, ever doubt that.”

So I was just thinking about Avatar ships (ok it’s because of that thing Dante just posted) and it made me realize that wow I like a good dose of politics in my shipping?
As in a good part of why I don’t ship Zutara is wow that would be a political nightmare. Like whoa there Zuko is doing a complete one eighty on his father and grandfather’s imperialistic policy and withdrawing Fire Nation control from everywhere else, marrying an influential woman with strong personal and family ties to not one but two of the most embittered former colonial fronts is like the opposite of what he should be doing. Just from a political standpoint Mai was a much wiser choice, as a minor noblewoman of his own Nation whose family background has probably already given her a solid grounding in governance and administration.
Meanwhile Aang has every reason to keep his strongest supporters as close as possible, and also to build strong ties with the Water Tribes in particular since that’s where the next Avatar incarnation will land.
And I mean obviously Katara is not just a political bargaining chip or something; for that matter, she’s probably a really major political player in her own right at this point, but that just means that she has as much responsibility as the boys to be aware of how her personal life reflects or will be believed to reflect larger phenomena in the political environment of their world.
I mean, I laughed when Azula asked Zuko to the Tumblr prom.

I know you’re my brother and everything, but for some reason when I ask other boys they act like I’m going to do something horrible to them… And so I do. But then Zuko replied…
[Transcript (Dante Basco as Zuko): Azula, what are we? Homeschool kids? You wanna be brother and sister at the dance? Are you trying to be cool or when we get there you’ll just try to kill me again?]
And I think my brain really did get broken cause I’ve listened to those far more than is necessary at 3 AM and I am still laughing at both! Help?
How do I stop listening to those?
