Old and Classy

Shannon. 23. They/them pronouns. Homestuck and other assorted fandoms. Lots of complaining about things I like. Strange ideas of what constitutes a cute animal. Accommodating if you need something tagged.

Probably not actually a quagsire IRL.

Professor Layton X Ace Attorney Magical Mystery Music - The Opening Theme of “Professor Layton X Gyakuten Saiban”

This theme is a beautiful arrangement of both themes into one haunting and cohesive piece. Got chills. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the people who put their heart and soul into creating work like this.

SHeDAISY - Mine All Mine (Knock on the Sky)

30 Days of Music
Day #17: A Song from Your Favorite Album

SHeDAISY: “Mine All Mine”

I drove you to the edge of the map
And after that, I pushed you off
Just to watch you fall
You never were the bounce-back kind
But, boy, this time you’ve proven me wrong after all
Now I’m the one who’s gonna crawl

(SHeDAISY’s Knock on the Sky album is going to be a hard album to top in my book. Every song is perfect, IMO.)

SHeDAISY - I Will...But (The Whole SHeBANG)

emilyisit:

I’m a country lovin’ fool.

Sometimes I remember that as a kid one of my very favorite songs was this catchy little thing about setting reasonable limits in a relationship and I get this overwhelming sense of pride in my ittle 12-year-old self.

This group is awesome. Also very good at illustrating the devolution of popular music.

They actually went to the 2010’s.  And they called it that.  show of hands, who feels old?  XD

“Devolution”? Really? It’s ok if you prefer older styles, but they put just as much into the modern stuff as the retro sections of this, and it sounded great.

Honestly can we just remove the word “devolution” from our vocabularies, there is no context in which it doesn’t just mean “I am being an elitist asshole who doesn’t understand the concept of evolution in the first place.”

Actually, music has been becoming more and more homogenised in the last 20 years. More songs use the same few chords, the same structure, the same meter, the same key, lyrics about the same themes. It’s not necessarily any worse than older music, it’s just less diverse.

Also, seems someone deleted the original comment which helpfully had all the songs listed.

EVOLUTION OF MUSIC by Pentatonix

11th Century
Salve Regina

1600s
Canon in D - Pachelbel

1800s
Symphony No. 5 - Beethoven

1910s
Danny Boy - Frederic Weatherly

1920s
Old Man River - Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II

1930s
Minnie the Moocher - Cab Calloway

1940s
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy - The Andrew Sisters

1950s
I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
La Bamba - Ritchie Valens

1960s
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Barbara Ann - Beach Boys
I Want to Hold Your Hand - The Beatles
RESPECT - Aretha Franklin

1970s
ABC - Jackson 5
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

1980s
Celebration - Kool & The Gang
Don’t Stop Believin’ - Journey
Thriller - Michael Jackson

1990s
Can’t Touch This - MC Hammer
…Baby One More Time - Britney Spears
Say My Name - Destiny’s Child
I Want It That Way - The Backstreet Boys

2000s
Hey Ya! - Outkast
Drop it Like It’s Hot - Snoop Dogg
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Hips Don’t Lie - Shakira
Single Ladies - Beyonce
I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry
Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
I Got a Feelin - Black Eyed Peas

2010s
Baby - Justin Bieber
We Found Love - Rihanna
Some Nights - Fun.
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
Gangnam Style - Psy
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen

I have to ask - that analysis that music is becoming more homogenized (which even if it is, that’s still not devolution, devolution is such a condescending and empty concept), what kind of samples is that based on? Pop music? Top 40s? Across all genres and media platforms? Are you considering a similar breadth of older music or are you basing that analysis on the songs that still get play on oldies stations?

I suspect that a lot of that impression that people have that new music is less diverse is because our cultural backdrop is saturated in current music of all kinds of quality while mostly we hear the standout pieces from previous eras. A mashup like this made in thirty years probably won’t contain six songs released in the period between 2010 and 2013 - it would have maybe three or four for the entire decade, like this one has three for the entire decade of the ’80s. A lot of the songs we’re sick of - and sick of because they sound so similar - will be all but forgotten.
